The Diocese of Victoria CWL awards a Bursary of $750 each year to the child or grandchild of members of the Catholic Church graduating from secondary school who are going on to further their education. The Freda Smith Bursary is awarded in honour of Freda Smith, a long time member of CWL who for 49 years played the organ for services at Queen of Peace parish until she retired at the age of 89. She championed education during her years of dedicated work for the parish.
This year there were six applicants from across the diocese. This year’s winner is Julia Jungwirth, a graduate of G.P. Vanier Secondary School in Courtenay. Julia is an honour student at G.P. Vanier who is very involved in her school community as well as our parish family. She has won several academic and sports awards at her school as well as taught Sunday School, is an alter server and a member of the youth group, At school, she has been involved in the Vanier Rotary Interact Club, the Environment Club, plays basketball and does cross country running plus track and field. She will be enrolling in the University of Victoria’s Engineering Program so she can work in Environmental Engineering.
